The hashbrown has had a tough run. For years it was the thing that came with your breakfast whether you asked for it or not, sitting off to the side doing nothing. We thought it deserved better than that.
The loaded hashbrowns section is one of the more popular parts of the menu, and it's not hard to see why once you try one. Hashbrowns as the base, loaded with proper toppings, built into a full meal. Four options, each one a bit different.
The four builds
Hollandaise Me! is maple glazed bacon, pan fried halloumi, sliced avocado and hot honey hollandaise. $28. The halloumi and bacon combination gets a bit of a reaction from people — in a good way. The hot honey hollandaise has become something of a signature.
The Americana is free range egg, breakfast patty, crispy bacon and cheese. $28. If you know what you want from a breakfast and you want a lot of it, this is your order. No surprises, no frills, just very good.
The B.L.A.T is maple glazed bacon, lettuce, smashed avocado and tomato confit. $27. The tomato confit is slow cooked and properly seasoned — it's not just a slice of tomato thrown on at the end. That detail comes up in feedback more than you'd expect.
Hash & Burn is chilli fried eggs, chorizo, cheese, avocado, cilantro and lime. $27. The name gives you a reasonable idea of what you're in for. It's got heat, it's got acid, it's got everything working at once. The people who order it tend to be very sure about it.
Why it works
A hashbrown is a better base than toast in a lot of ways. More texture, more flavour, holds up better under sauces. It started as an experiment and stuck because the results were hard to argue with.
The section doesn't get as much attention as the fried sandwiches or the bennies, but the regulars who've found it tend to keep coming back for it. It's the kind of dish that doesn't need much explaining once it's in front of you.
A note on the hot honey hollandaise
It shows up on a couple of dishes. If you haven't tried it yet, the Hollandaise Me! is a good place to start. It's got a gentle heat that builds slowly rather than hitting you in the face. People ask about it more than almost anything else we make.
