Brisbane has had a lot of smashed avo. A lot of it forgettable. Served on whatever bread was in the delivery, topped with a wedge of lemon and called a day. We figured if we were going to put it on the menu, it had to actually be worth ordering.
What makes this one different
It starts with the bread. Dark rye sourdough, lightly toasted, from a local baker. The kind of bread that holds up under the weight of everything on top of it. That part matters more than people think.
Then there's the avo itself. Properly smashed and seasoned, not scooped out of a squeeze bottle. Topped with heirloom tomatoes, Persian feta, balsamic glaze, and fresh greens. It's a GFO, VG-friendly dish that doesn't announce itself as either of those things, which is exactly how it should be.
The feta question
Persian feta gets used everywhere but not always for the right reasons. On this dish it works because it's creamy rather than crumbly, and it cuts through the richness of the avo without overwhelming everything else. A small detail that shows up in every bite.
The heirloom tomatoes are sourced seasonally. They're not on the plate for colour — they're there because a good tomato with good avo and salty feta is one of those combinations that just makes sense.
Add ons worth knowing about
The base dish is $23. A poached egg on top ($3.50) is a very reasonable decision. Bacon ($5.50) is also on the table if you're not committed to the vegetarian build. We'll leave that between you and your conscience.
Halloumi ($5.50) is another option that gets ordered more than you'd expect. Adds a bit of texture and makes the whole thing more of a meal. No complaints from us on that front.
Who orders it
Honestly, everyone. The vegetarians order it because it's actually good, not just because it's their only option. The people who came in for something else order it because it looked good on the next table. We've had regulars come back specifically because they couldn't stop thinking about it, which is the kind of feedback that makes you feel like you got the dish right.
